Creative update
I made progress on Chapter 15 of Shield of the Goddess this month, but it is still not finished. I hope to finish it next month.
In September I gave a reading of Chapter 1 at Read–o-Rama, a literary event in Renton for writers to share their work and socialize while enjoying snacks and drinks. They have a monthly event called Renton Write-up, which I’ve attended a few times and enjoyed.
On Labor Day I joined the National Writer’s Union. They are the only trade union representing all kinds of writers and editors. I have never belonged to a union before, but it felt like the right time to take that step. One of my favorite writers, Ursula Le Guin, was a member.
I also finished reading one of the most important books of 2025: Empire of AI by Karen Hao. It’s the story of how a handful of tech companies, including OpenAI, unleashed Generative AI upon the world. Check out my book review.
I released a new poem that I wrote this summer called Milestones, reflecting on my sixty-fourth birthday, and how the word can mean a marker on the roads of ancient empires, or achievements in life.

Personal update
Summer camps are done for the year, and our nephew is back in school. I am looking forward to the cooler weather and the slower pace of life.
I continue to enjoy doing freelance technical writing and editing. I am learning new skills, and meeting new people from all over the world. Working part time also gives me more time to write, read, play guitar, reconnect with friends, and hang out at home.
My wife got me some fun writer-themed gifts for my birthday, including a new tumbler, writing dice and a mapmaking solo role-playing game.
